Alright, this is what we have so far, condensed. If I'm missing anything, yell at me.
The Atlas Saga:
The Setting
The HUB- A space station orbiting a planet, this is the center for travelers, explorers, thieves, merchants, and everyone else. It’s where civilization can be found, even in the middle of space.
-My idea: Perhaps a HUB for each planet?
The Planet- The HUB orbits this planet, which is currently unnamed. This planet is still being explored and has a very small population. The planet has one main city with a spaceport facility. HUB flights reach the planet daily to do anything from offload supplies to supply new inhabitants. The planet is a center for exploration and science, but also offers many dangers. After all, we don’t know who lives there, just that we haven’t seen them yet. Of course, there are no obvious signs of civilization, but that doesn’t mean nothing is there, does it?
More will be added as the forum grows.
The Characters
Races- Humans, for sure. What else there is, we haven’t decided. It needs to be decided, of course.
Occupations- Also undecided. We have a ton of ideas, let’s sort out the chaff. Here are as many of them that I could find:
-Military- The force of law in the wild regions of space.
-Lawbreakers, Thieves, Smugglers- They live outside the law, and make quite a profit doing so. They are so rich that it’s hard to do anything about the problem. They’re also quite ruthless.
-Explorers- Employed by many companies to seek for opportunities on the planet. After all, everyone likes adventure, and getting paid for it just makes the time even better.
-Netpeople- I didn’t know what to call them, but they nearly live off the Net/Matrix/Whatever it’s called. I’ll say more on that later. They help everyone use the net, for a price.
-Professionals- Anything from Bounty Hunters to Shopkeepers. They make the world turn round. They’re really important, but most of their lives are rather boring. There are a few notable exceptions, however.
Starting Off- The characters can’t be very powerful to start, as that wouldn’t be fun. But they can’t bee too weak either. Perhaps something along the line of a personal weapon and a profession system. For example:
Bob is a new character. He wants to be an engineer. Bob needs proper schooling. Perhaps the schooling could be what he starts with.
OR
John wants to be a Bounty Hunter. However, licenses are very expensive. He could start out with a license.
This also offers an opportunity to change your classes around while you are RPing. So, if you get bored with being an engineer, you can pay to become a bounty hunter.
However, you’d start off as a really bad bounty hunter. Say, level 1. If you are a natural bounty hunter, how abount you start at level 3 or so. This would need to be worked out, especially the specifics and advantages, by the WMs.
The Stuff
Personal Weapons- I guess mainly handheld ones to start, such as blaster pistols or laser knives, or something to that effect. Of course, rifles and other things can be purchased eventually. Explosives are found all over as well, but aren’t used as much. Heavy weapons are reserved for military use, but quite a few of them have gone missing over time.
Spaceships- They need to be expensive, or at least risky. You could buy a ship pretty cheaply, but do you want to run the risk of it exploding, or the life support failing, or the engines dieing, etc. Better quality costs more money. In order to keep things more personal, weapons on ships have been conveniently outlawed except for military use due to several terrorist incidents. They can still be aquired on the black market, however…
Transports are available to the public for a small fee.
Defensive- There is always armor around. Not much can stop a blaster bolt, however, and what can is pretty expensive. How expensive, we’ll leave to the WMs. Starship armor can be purchased, but it is very expensive.
The Net/Matrix/Whatever
Users- Anyone can use the Net, but it is very expensive to have a personal port. The net is available for public use at centers designed for the purpose. Information is all over the net, and many things happen over it. Netpeople use it to plan all sorts of things, and they sell their secure channels to others for a price. (Secure channels are really just PMs)
Outside Our World
Earth- Earth is still around, and it is still the center of Human life. But we don’t go there, for now. After all, it is far away. But life goes on there, and most people give little thought to those in the far reaches of space. But conditions on the Home Planet still effect those in space. For example, war can still erupt and disrupt life on the HUB.
