What was the first video game system that you ever owned.
Mine was the NES. My friend gave me his when he got his SNES. It came complete with a running pad, zap gun, and a collection of about 20 games. I only bought one game for the system: Final Fantasy.
So what got you started?
NES here as well. First game I played for it was Megaman 2.

My first system I can remember like it was yesterday...A good old Sega Genesis, cool black, I always liked it better than those damn Nintendo kids...It was pretty awesome, although I mainly just played Sonic games, the Lion King, and Batman Forever.

NES....Came home from kindergarten and my dad had one set up. I didn't even know what it was, but I knew it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
The first gaming experience I remember was playing the original Mario Bros.
Damn fine times...

NES. I begged my mother for it when I saw it at Wal-Mart then when she said no, my grandmother bought it for me.
It came with that stupid track game where you run, duck hunt, and Super Mario Brothers, all 3 of which I was too young to beat. Though I did have fun with it. One of my earliest childhood memories is when my dad and I would play duckhunt and he'd yell out "Duck!" and we'd both duck and cover.
It seems corny now, but it was at least a happy memory.

You couldn't beat Duck Hunt or Mario? We're about the same age, so that would make us about 5 or 6 when we got the NES. And I totally kicked ass in both games. I guess I've always been a 1337 gamer :)
Super Mario was the greatest. I still find myself humming songs from that game that I haven't heard in over 10 years :p
EDIT: 1000 posts...Yay

Sega genises totally, my favorite games were ones based off of disney movies.
When I was 5 or 6, in the early 1980s, my dad bought us an Atari 2600. Combat, Air Sea Battle, Yar's Revenge, Dragonfire, Cosmic Ark, Defender, Berzerk...good times.

SNES, complete with Super Mario World, soon to be joined by Super Mario All-Stars in my video game collection. I swear, SNES is the greatest system ever created, even if it didn't have Smash Bros.
Super Mario Brothers... which I was too young to beat. Though I did have fun with it.
I feel your pain. I couldn't beat Super Mario Brothers when I was a kid.
SNES, with Super Mario Brothers. Had so much fun with it.
Ah yes, jmd! Another Atari 2600 player! :D That was my first system as well, although I don't really remember playing it all that much since I was really young when my parents bought it. Sadly though, a really bad storm came through and flooded the basement and the Atari 2600 was ruined. :( *sniff* Poor lil' Atari...I hardly knew ye.

Mine was also the Atari 2600. You guys have probably seen these already, but there are these Atari controllers out there with an Atari system and a handful of games built into them. You just hook them up to your television and play. They are like 15 bucks. I got one for Christmas last year and it's pretty cool. It has Adventure, Yar's Revenge, Missile Command, and Centipede, among others.
Sega Master System with Sonic. Good times...
Atari (before it was called the 2600). Combat was the best game. My brothers and I would spend hours blasting each other.
I also had the Radio Shack version of Pong - 2 dial controllers, about 6 games including 2 shooting games. The best part was shooting the ball while someone else was playing Pong. I don't remember if I had this before or after getting the Atari.

 These young whipper snappers!
My first "system" was a black and white Pong game that only played Pong, nothing else. No cartridges, slots or ports. Two hard wired controllers that were basically just knobs. The cost a fricken fortune too!

Super Nintendo.
It was that old Sega rectangle thing with the fat cartridge games. I'd be damned if I can remember the name, but it had games like Shinobi and California Sports.

Just think...In 10 years, a kid will be able to say, "My first system was an Xbox 360!" and I will bow my head in shame.
Be proud of your roots. Those who grew up with the Atari, embrace it! :)

NES, I got the typical package with Duckhunt and Mario Bros, I remember the Gun was broken so when we were little we danced around to the music of duck hunt and the goofy dog giggling...

Our parents never let us have a video game system till my brother and I bought one for ourselves. It took us about 6 months to save up for a NES (which by that time was already about 4 years old). We bought it from some guy my dad worked with. The only game it came with was the original SMB.
wow, you all are talking about these really old systems(relativily) from the 80's. I feel young. The first gaming console in my house was the PS1 when I was six. But it was my brothers. The first one I actually owned was a PS2 and I got it for christmas the year after it came out. The first game I played on it was Jack and Daxter, I beat it in about four hours. My favorite game for the PS1 was deffinately Spyro the Dragon, Best game ever.

YOU HAVE A PONG?!
HAWKEYE, you are |33t beyond a level I could ever dream of.
Meh, pong. There are much better games out there then and now. So what if it was the first "video game" that doesnt mean its the best. And, leet is spelled 1337.
First one that I ever owned was NES.
But my brothers owned an Atari and a Commodore64 which were the first systems I ever played.
When I was really really little [like, still an infant], we had an atari. Only, the sump pump backed up, and killed the basement. Which was where the atari was. :( I only know we had one 'cause there's pictures of me 'playing' on it. [Basically my parents turned the thing on, and i pushed buttons.]
After that, we didn't get a gaming system for a long time: the next system was an N64. Mario Kart 64. xD I ROCKED at that game. and I don't anymore. Have roughly 20 games for it.
Few years later, we got a PS2. which is what we still game on in this house. :) I'm beginning the plant chapter of mgs2, and then I'm going WAYY back and playing FFVII. woot.
I've also got a game boy color, and a game boy advance. Don't use the color one anymore, but it's still fun to have around. I play tetris on the advance every so often...:D
Commodore 64 was a computer (as opposed to being a game system). But the ony thing it was good for was playing games. There were some great games for it back in the day.
