All of us have to report here within 48 hours or you will be kicked out. There is a severe lack of posting from most members. Dementia, BLOD, Carlos, Bob, and myself do not have to post. The post must include your absence from the clan. If these standards are not met you will be removed.

.......Me, BLOD, Carlos, and soundsystem have discussed this and decided that this is best for the clan.

I really don't want this to come off as "you need to do a lot of work and blah blah blah" because I have been a person who has said that the clans are for fun first and foremost; not work.

However, I am looking at it this way; if you guys aren't gonna participate at all then there's no point in you being in the clan. If you guys really want to be in the clan you have to show some effort.

I like it. I think the first ability should be that it keeps everything until the end of turn (with out the except at the end.)

I liked the first one, but the copying should be permanant *except* for the copying ability itself. Then get rid of the red ability and make a new one, maybe fire-breathing or something. And it should be 0/3 or close to that.

I like Unit's idea with the firebreathing but it should be like a 1/3 or something anyway..
i dont think copying should be permanent.. but i realyl like the red ability

The one main thing I think we should base this creature on is that is to be a BEAST!!!!! Big bad and mean like monger. So, things I really like so far........

The creature being at least a 4/4. Preferable a 5/5, but at least a 4/4

Bob's "when it gets blocked" ability is truly a stroke of genius! I wish I had thought of it!

Those are the 2 things I REALLY want to incorporate into the creature.

Plus, when I think about it now I think the red ability should say something like......

1R: The Manevolent gains any one ability of target creature at random perminatly

Since red is the color of chaos and such it would be a lot more fitting if it was at random.

I realize the wording is horrible on the ability and so bad some of you might not have understood what I was even trying to say. So I will tell ya......

Say someone has a Serra Angel out. You target Serra with you Manevolent. You then randomly choose between flying or attacking does not cause it to tap as the ability that Manevolent gains.

What do ya think, and how can we(if possible) word it better.

a 5cc creature... with that ability, and all the rest... can be too good. avatar of woe was too much to cast, so it can have an insane ability.

i do see your point though... but can you add a discard clause or an upkeep to it please, cos it just looks too good.

i do like the ability pinching bit though... concidering upkeep costs are concidered abilities now, so it can be a mixed blessing.

As for the contest thread we can continue that talk here. I will summarize the important parts of the thread on here so everyone is caught up......

First off: The rules and objectives.....

abilities and mechs.

your task is to come up with an interesting ability for the upcoming set (oddessy). the cards you then must design are-

2 creatures
1 legend
and 3 others (can be all or any combination of creatures, enchantments, artifacts, etc.)

for only one colour.

also, there must be a design of a separate informal mechaninc which is shared by all the 5 colours in a 5 card set (eg. leeches in invasion).
the best wins.

contest ends on 5th of august.

So, here have been the idea's so far.....

Terraformers suggestions(he's just full of idea's!:)):

Forfeit

This mechanic would for the most part involve cards already in play, rather than come into play effects. It would involve skipping a certain number of untap/draw/combat phases, or even turns, to generate a powerful effect. Here's one idea (pardon the creature name, though ):

Spineless Jellyfish

Creature-Jellyfish

Whenever Spineless Jellyfish attacks, you may choose to skip your next combat phase. If you do, it gets +3/+3 and is unblockable until end of turn.

The way this mechanic would work is that when you play a card, you are given the option of searching your library for a copy of that card, at the cost of a pretty severe drawback. For example:

Phyrexian Makeover (:D)

Instant

When you play Phyrexian Makeover, you may search your library for another copy of Phyrexian Makeover and put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. If you do, pay 2 life and sacrifice a permanent.

Destroy target nonblack creature, it can't be regenerated.

Scrolling

-this mechanic would be built into a creature from each color, and maybe even an artifact creature. it would involve a Scroll Rack-like effect when the creature comes into play, with the potency of the effect depending on game conditions, which are also appropriate to the creature's color. however, i think it would be important to stipulate that it must COME INTO PLAY FROM YOUR HAND, otherwise it would be too easy to abuse, like the "untap lands" mechanic in the "free creatures" from urza's saga--i.e. palinchron, priest of gix, etc.

for those who aren't familiar with scroll rack:


Scroll Rack
2, Artifact, Tempest Rare
1, T: Choose any number of cards in your hand and set those cards aside. Put an equal number of cards from the top of your library into your hand. Then put the cards set aside in this way on top of your library in any order.


the creatures would all have the same creature type, with perhaps another creature type thrown on for the appropriate color. i will use Archaeologist for now since it seems appropriate.

an example of this incorporated into my idea for a mechanic would be:

Quirion Archaeologist

Creature- Elf Archaeologist

When you play Quirion Archaeologist, set up to X cards in your hand aside, where X is the number of creatures in play under your control. Put an equal number of cards from the top of your library into your hand. Then put the cards set aside in this way on top of your library in any order.

or, we could make these more oriented into a theme-deck approach, with each Archaeologist's scroll effect determined by the number of Elves, Goblins, Merfolk, etc.. in play under the player's control. Let me know what you guys think of this idea--i think it would make for some VERY strong cards that aren't blatantly broken because no actual card advantage is being gained from it, just the ability to search through one's library quickly and efficiently.

Ransac's suggestion(I actually like this idea. It is a bit too informal and just a little too unoriginal for my taste, but I wish they would print something like these:D).......

How about an ability that uses the effects of Kird Ape? You know, the creature gets a bonus as long as a land of a particular type is in play? For example, here's my card:

From now on I will try to pay more attention on AIM so I can keep everyone's suggestions in order. There are some other idea's being thrown around, but I can't remember what they were. First chance I get I will get Danzig to come tell us all about his Growth idea:)

Danzig came up with the idea, he, BLoD, Dementia and I talked about it on AIM for about 2 hours yesterday morning, and I templated these cards. A couple things that need to be fixed are:

1) the creature's names ;)
2) when the spells can be played. as Danzig pointed out, instant speed discard would be a problem.

3) other specific details pertaining to each card. for example, Danzig thinks the green one sucks, and in retrospect I agree :D.

Here is my idea for the "formal" mechanic. It is basically a combination of lejakl's "reveal" mechanic, my "deja vu" mechanic, and a mechanic danzig came up with yesterday morning but i believe we came to the conclusion his was too abuseable/ complicated to work, as well as forfeit and deja vu. so, without further ado:

mechanic=duplicity (again, this name should be changed--as Dementia pointed out, there's already a card named Duplicity.

example of it on a card (note, this card is probably broken and will probably not be one we'd submit ;)).

The Cultivators are cool. Thallids are back, and they learned some new tricks;)

Most of the abilities on the Cultavators are too weak.....well, I guess there's not much better things to make them. Perhaps keep the same abilities and make it 2 and 4 counters that come off. Think about it for a second.....

10 turns = 2 lands.....that is junky if I ever seen junky.

Duplicity is AWSOME! Unless someone comes up with a better idea I think that is prolly the best for the formal ablity that I have seen.

Just to make sure: I think I misunderstood the first time I read it. The way I thought it worked at first was you pay the Duplicity cost to actually play the card.

Meaning that you would get to counter target spell and then search for a copy of it. That's not how it works right?

You keep the first in your hand, and just search for a copy of it right? Basically your cards are reproducing:)

Unfortunatly I beleive that Instants have a HUGE advatage over other cards that would have Duplicity. We should either take that into account when making CC for Instants or we should make it so that Duplicity works like Cycling and you can play it as an Instant all the time.

Or perhaps to balance such an obviously powerful ability all Duplicity should be sorcery speed.

What do you guys think?

i agree....the "Cultivators" can probably be made better without making them broken. I think the idea of going from 3 & 5 down to 2 & 4 is a good way to handle it....we could also give the Cultivators some special ability in addition.....

Dementia, you're right about how i intended Duplicity to work--the cards reproduce in your hand :D. i also agree with you that we should make it so you can play the Duplicity cost whenever you could play an instant, to avoid the problem of the instants being too powerful relative to creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and sorceries.

Contrary to popular opinion, I dont like Cultivator.. It takes too long. three turns to deal 2 damage? .. id rather play a shock. THings like it.. it's an original idea, but i dont think it's really that playable.

okay, everyone, I'm going to make my last contribution to contest 6 for a while, since i'm leaving tomorrow for a while and won't be back until August 3rd. so,

-for the "cultivators", we should take Dementia's suggestions and lower the counter requirements for ALL of them from 3 & 5 to 2 and 4. i think if we go any lower, they will be broken (i.e. a free shock or disenchant every turn), so 2/4 seems like the right number. also, we should specify when the abilities can be used, to avoid abuse of the phyrexian's discard ability and balduvian's LD ability--both of which should have "you may play this ability whenever you could play a sorcery". the rest should have that same clause but with "instant" instead of sorcery. finally, danzig and i came to the agreement that the green cultivator's saproling ability sucks, and that it should produce 3-4 saprolings instead.
still can't think of a name, though, so i'll leave that up to the more creative members of the clan ;).

-we also need to finalize our decision about the "formal" ability/mechanic. i talked to danzig for a while yesterday and he doesn't seem to like "duplicity", but i do and so does everyone else that's posted on here since i introduced the idea. it IS a very good ability, bordering on the edge of being broken, but unless we can come up with something better i think it should be the one we use. we should also modify it so that the ability can be played at instant speed, regardless of the type of card it is that has the mechanic.

-once the decision is finalized, we need to come up with 2 creatures, 1 legendary card, and 3 cards of any type. i'll work on them some while I'm away--that's what long plane trips are good for :D--but you all should start on them too. also, come up with a better name for "duplicity". i like lejakl's suggestions...maybe you can agree on one of those.

finally, this is a little off topic, but addressed to meno-

i'm fine with you joining the DMs, especially since quite a few of us won't be as active in the clan in two months--myself included, since i'm going back to school--but by joining us, you ARE relinquishing all ties to Spammers United, correct? i know that's probably a stupid question, but i just want to make sure.

I can understand why you wouldn't like them that much Lejakl with the 3 and 5 counters, but with 2 and 4 the cards become quite good:)

Think about Lejakl, ever other turn dealing 2 damage ain't bad. Every 4 turns you get to kill a creature, and so on.

I like all of them except the red one......the red one is bass ackwards in my opinion. It should be something like.......

Before you say that it's broken please consider it will usally be 5th turn by the time you get to use the LD ability anyway. It is inherantly weaker then most of the others since LD's main strenth is quick disruption. If this card was printed the LD ability would barely ever be used and you know it. So don't call it broken:p

About the "play as a sorcery" thing: Greel, Mindraker has discard as an instant and Siesmic Mage had LD as an instant. But I have no objection to them being sorcery speed if yall think they should be. But there is NO need to say the others should be instant speed. That would be like having that stipulation on every instant spell there is. Abilities are already it instants. No reason to reiterate it.

Most of you seem to think we only need one mechanic. I was under the impression we had to design TWO. one formal ability/mechanic for 6 cards (2 creatures, 1 legend, and 3 others) AND an informal mechanic. NOT one or the other. Am I misunderstanding something here?

I think we should leave everything as is. They said that the cards we make all have to be the same color. Well, they are. It's just that the Griff is a couple extra colors:)

The question of whether or not we can make multicolor cards was asked TWICE on the contest thread, and it was never answered so id multi's are not allowed we can not really be blamed.

About contest 7: So, it's gotta be a song about some legendary "thing". It can be any legendary thing, made up or an existing legend in magic. I think we should make up a song about the Manevolent(our creature we created:))

For all those who haven't read it or need to reread(myself included to tell the truth) here it is.......

In the Marburry Academy of Advanced Magical Education, girls and guys were allowed to profess in their chosen color. Camyla, a blue mage in pursuit, was a student at the Academy, the president of the RPG gaming club, president of the student council, and a writer addicted to her journal. Within her journal she wrote about the weirdest creatures she could think of in her dreams and nightmare. Recently her new quasi-novel, quaintly titled “The Malevolent.” Her power to summon creatures of her imaginations never got her into any real trouble, since she could put them back without evidence left behind.

Soon the malevolent one was summoned to reality. Her imagination warped the Goddess Siren, the seducer of Greek mythology. In her dorm room, the creature came into the room. Her dragon wings spread just enough to display the patterns and scales. Spines emerged from her shoulders and down the front -covering necessary parts of her body- when willed to. Camyla stared into the her eyes, completely taken and afraid at the same time. The creature’s talons reached out and was so close to slicing her face. Words abandoned her, her eyes lingered on every scale and spine. To be this creature, she thought, I could take over anything, just mesmerizing people.

The old saying “Be careful what you wish for” comes to mind at this instant. The creature stepped close, closed it’s diamond blue eyes and became Camyla. Rather, the girl became the creature, and this is how the history of Camyla, the Shapeshifter.



The scare began. At first no one knew what was wrong. Friends became traitors, spilling gossipy crushes. Students were taking on acts of dishonesty and stepping into criminal life of lighting trash buckets on fire, or raiding the store room for corrosive substances. Matthew saw Camyla as an infestation on the community through all the years at the Academy. This brewed from a brutal young lover’s breakup he couldn’t psychological accept. To Matthew, her innocent appearance was nothing to him, she was hiding a secret identity and he yearned to release the story into the air.

When he did, before the graduation ceremony at the Academy, Camyla and her shapeshifter creature within was banished. When she woke from the damnation, her back against snow with asylum whiteness in all four directions.



She grew in the chill. Her wings took her higher and her hide was unpenetrable. Camyla, the girl, submerged and grew dormant in the chill till she didn’t respond anymore. The girl was the Freudian ego and superego of them, but now only the id remains. The creature didn’t know time and as time passed, it didn’t grow old, only stronger. Wings beat against the cold and wrecked villages that it came upon. When it encountered a new monster, it absorbed the monster, like it did to Camyla. It inhabited firebreathing dragons, mages of natural magical powers, beasts of giant strength. Village after village the shapeshifter became a monster, growing buffer and more invincible.



In the end, the creature was known as Camyla, the shapeshifter. The dragon wings were still there, as were the spines and talons. The female body contained strength of infinite people, her hair was like whiplash and her eyes gleamed with fire at times, and ice at times. Fire was a common ability, it emerged so often during battles that some referred to Camyla as the Queen of Fire. Her hands projected fire, her eyes, her hair, her mouth sent flames streaking. She was impossible to capture, she teleported from one plane to another, an ability she inhabited from a interplanar salesman. Her ultimate ability, shapeshifting is what makes Camyla the most feared, for she can be anyone.

ok everyone, we need to decide a couple things:

1) is the song going to be original or a parody?

2) what style(s) are we going to incorporate into the song?

Chair and I were talking and we think it would be cool to have some kind of alternation/dialogue within the song. For example, the song layout could look something like this:

1 rap verse
1 slow, lyrical verse
1 rap verse
1 slow, lyrical verse
.
.
.
.
etc.

or it could have 2+ "voices", much like Eminem's "Guilty Conscious" if any of you are familiar with that song. This would be especially relevant if we decide to write the song for "The Malevolent", which seems to be the prevailing wish of the clan judging from the recent posts.....

chair, can you post the first 8 lines of the song you came up with, from Camyla's view?

everyone, here's one possible format we're thinking of using for the song:

-alternating verses with two perspectives. the first one would be "sung" by Camyla, the second by The Malevolent. they would be two completely different music styles to represent the two personalities. each verse would start out with 4 lines, and would merge into a final verse which is "sung" by the combined Camyla/Malevolent entity. i was thinking before that we could gradually taper off the size of the verses leading up to the final verse, but now that i think about it it might work better keeping them all with 4 lines.

-for a rhyme scheme...that needs to be determined. if we use a smooth, lyrical style for Camyla's verses (which I think we should, anyway), we can probably have one rhyming pair. if we were to use rap for The Malevolent (which would represent its chaotic personality well, i think) we'd probably use two rhyming pairs.

-a lot of this is still up in the air, so everyone should feel free to contribute. we need to decide on:

1) the exact song format

and

2) how many verses we'll have

before we actually write the lyrics.

let's get going on this :D!!!

To the Preacher: I think a good way to do this would be that we will watch you until the end of contest 7 then see if we want you in the clan. This will serve two purposes: One; we will see how frequent a poster you are and see how much you'll be around. Two; Ransac has told me that it was rather difficult to jump into the clan in the middle of a contest. It can be intimadating and turn ya off of the whole clan thing. So if you do join you'll join after the contest and get settled before you have to participate.

Here are those lines Terraformer was talking about.....

Don't think those lines are workable in the format you are talking about....but I suppose the basic idea of it could be written into a new format.

is anyone else familiar with "One", by Metallica? i actually think chair's lines could be modified slightly to fit the format of that song, and we could make a parody of that. "One" is appropriate to the Camyla/Malevolent story as well--there are two different parts to the song, which could represent Camyla pre-transformation and post-transformation.

I think the purpose of these two verses should serve to foreshadow the rest of the song, which they pretty much do already, but maybe we can improve them.

i'm not the clan leader, so obviously my word isn't final, but i'm going to vote against him joining us because:

1) Chair has already said that we won't even be considering anyone else until after contest 7, and he IS the clan leader.

2) He's simultaneously asked to join two other clans--The Called and Project Mayhem. Because of this, it doesn't seem to me like he's very dedicated to our cause, much less The Called's or Project Mayhem's. I think he just wants to join a clan and doesn't really care which one it is. firstly, our contest 7 entry is due exactly one week from today. i will continue to work on it, but encourage the rest of you to do so as well.

secondly, chair has appointed me to be the clan recruiter. we are looking into boosting our numbers, for a couple reasons:

1) we're a very small clan anyway, and a couple of us don't participate that much, which is certainly fine, since clan participation is of course entirely voluntary, but just the same, we think more members are in order.

2) we want to meet new people :).

I am going to try going after people that we want in the clan first, rather than opening up a recruiting thread. This will allow us "quality control", if you will :cool:.

I have PM'd three people already...one is definitely interested in joining, and I'm waiting for a response from the other two. If any of you know someone you'd like to be in the DMs, feel free to PM me and I'll look into them. The only contraint is that you cannot give me the name of someone who is currently in another clan. We don't want to develop a reputation of breaking up other clans by stealing members from them.

After contest 7 is over, I will ask those who I've contacted to post on our clan thread, and we can vote on them in the same way that y'all voted on me not too long ago :D.

I have now contacted 4 people about joining the DMs. I have gotten a reply from 2 of them, both of whom are interested in joining us :). However, I'm not going to reveal who they are yet--and I would suggest that those of you that DO know whom I've contacted do the same--because:

1) I don't want to put any additional pressure on them to apply.
2) I don't want other clans to try to woo them either :D.
3) I want it to be a pleasant surprise :D.

Once contest 7 is over, I will ask them to post on our clan thread. It's up to Chair how exactly we handle this, obviously, but I think the best way to do it is to employ the method y'all used to vote myself and meno in :cool:: allow clan members one week to vote on each of them, and if no one votes against them in that week-long period, they're in.

I'm not sure yet, Preacher. I am still waiting for a response from two of the other four people I am trying to recruit for the clan. When I hear back from them, I will get in touch with Dementia and we will vote on you and the other four (or however many of those four are interested in joining us) in the procedure I have outlined in one of my previous posts. So, relax :D.

Thanks for your suggestions for the song. However, the purpose of the contest is to write a song about a Magic "legend". We have decided to go with a song about "The Malevolent", which is the legendary Shapeshifter the clan wrote a story about for its contest 7 entry, and based the song on a parody of "One"--arguably one of Metallica's best songs ever :).

Well, ElGato has blown my cover :D. He is one of the four people I recruited (in case anyone from Neo-Ground is reading this, I did NOT contact him until AFTER the clan dissolved....I had nothing to do with its "death").

We will NOT be considering anyone else for the clan for the time being other than these five people (the four I recruited, and Preacher)

Here is how the voting process is going to work:

-You will have until one week from today (9/16/01) to post your vote on this thread or send it to Dementia via PM or AIM.

-If you do NOT vote, it will be assumed that you have voted FOR EVERY ONE of the potential new members. You may still vote if you DO want any number of them to join, but keep in mind that if you don't post here (or tell Dementia through PM or AIM), your "nay" vote will not be counted.

-Dementia has not set a "limit" on the number of clan members we are going to have enrolled, so you should not feel that you have to choose some over the other. Cast your vote on the basis of whether you want each of them in the clan or not...do not take any other factors into account.
