I am going to add some riddles once I find a certain book...

There may be a prize.

Heres the first one you just answer on the thread when it is guessed I will post a new one please don't post your own riddles and don't give away the riddle resource if you know!

What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

Taysir
05-27-01, 22:02
Sorry for the double post. I need to say if you know all the answers cause you know the reference please don't answer them all. You now have 24 hours to answer this first riddle.

meno

are these riddles supposed to be about cards?

Phrozen
05-29-01, 04:11
The up, up, up it goes yet it never grows is either a city or a building

Taysir
05-29-01, 15:54
Sorry I was busy yesterday so you got 48 hours to guess:)

These are not about cards however unless it was a coinsidenece.

The answer to the first riddle is: Mountain

I hope some one can guess this one...

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

davinox
05-29-01, 17:14
Teeth!!!! I think...

don't we have about 30 teeth in our mouth?

meno
05-29-01, 21:20
fyi: we have 28, 32 counting wisdom teeth

now these are confusing cause they could mean a lot of things, like a stampede?

It's chestnuts. How do I know? I have the book, but I'll try not to use it.

Lots has the right answer! Please don't answer them all, give some time for other to get it then you can guess without the book:)

Remember you can take guess's even if your totally unsure.

Heres the next one:

An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"But in low place
Not in high place."

so what does it mean?

GoatLord
05-30-01, 22:32
The first Eye is in the sky, the second is on the ground. I don't know what they are though.

LOTS

Is it the horizon? I don't remember that being an answer, and I'm too lazy to go check the book.

Taysir
05-31-01, 17:41
Nope. But Goat Lord has the right idea.

Answer a Mountain

Um mountain do grow or shrink. As the earth's tectonic plates collide the form mountains and push them upward. And erosion makes them smaller. so it can't be a mountian for the first answer.

Sorry I was busy on the weekend so I will post the answer to the latest one.

Answer: "Sun on the daisies"

Heres the next one:

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Taysir

An Egg

I don't get it... teeth made sense... chestnuts? You mean the callosity on a horse's leg? Or somebody eating one?

LOTS
06-06-01, 15:52
No, It's an egg. And for the chestnuts one, the anwser is a bit confusing. The book says chestnuts, then says teeth.

Never thirsty, ever drinking,

Well, some people might not have known. There were still a few riddles left for the few people who never read the book. I was waiting for the "What's in my pocket?" one. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted...

cthuluftaghn
06-06-01, 22:30
omg... I'm SO sorry. I thought he had a book of riddles or something. I didn't mean to ruin the thread. I only recognized those 2 from the Hobbit movie. Thought it was coincidence... I was all proud of myself for recognizing them. Now I feel like a stooge. :(

Volraths_bane
06-07-01, 00:34
We can still do other Riddles...I love riddles

Start with an easy one.....

"No sooner spoken than broken"

cthuluftaghn
06-07-01, 08:25
Silence. Is that right?

How about this... a man is found shot to death in his car with a single gunshot wound to the head. The doors are all locked from the inside, and the windows are up. There are no bullet holes puncturing any part of the car. It was determined, however, that it was definitely murder... NOT suicide. How is this possible?

Shadowlord
06-07-01, 12:02
he was shot in the head by someong outside the car.
then he was put into the car by the killer and then the killer locked the card with that device that shuts down all locks.

cthuluftaghn
06-07-01, 12:15
Possible answer, but incorrect. Let me add that there were no fingerprints other than the victim's anywhere in or on the car, and it was determined that the victim was killed IN the car.

baronsensen
06-07-01, 12:43
He was poisoned, then he shot himself as he died.

cthuluftaghn
06-07-01, 12:49
Nope. Negative. Not it. Not even close. Nice try, but no cigar.

Volraths_bane
06-07-01, 14:48
The murderer was still in the car?

cthuluftaghn
06-07-01, 16:59
Ok... it's only been one afternoon, but that's 3 wrong answers, so 3 strikes and yer out.

The answer is: The car was a convertable. Doors locked, windows up... top down. ;)

Here's another one.

A woman leaves her office to go out to her car. There are no lights on in the parking lot. The moon and stars are not in the sky. Her car is jet black, with no lights on. It's on the far side of the otherwise empty parking lot... almost 200 ft away, and parked in front of a black building. Despite all this, the woman can see her car with perfect clarity. How is this possible (no, she's not wearing night vision goggles)

Ataris Regal
06-07-01, 17:07
uh duh its not nightime

cthuluftaghn
06-07-01, 17:18
Brilliant. You'd be amazed at how many people don't get that one.

A plane crashes right on the U.S. / Canadian border. In which country do you bury the survivors?

Ataris Regal
06-07-01, 17:35
you dont bury the survivors unless ur crazy

cthuluftaghn
06-07-01, 17:39
Hmmph... guess I got too cocky with my first one. Those two were too easy. Fine!

What have I got in my pocket? :-)

Ataris Regal
06-07-01, 17:44

Read it carefully

A man is found dead on the sidewalk. Near him is a mint, a plate, and a shell.

How did he die and why?

Will have more good traditional riddles tomorrow.

GoatLord
06-07-01, 23:08
Someone shot him with a shotgun and left the used shell there because he wouldn't share his breathmints. I have no idea what the plates for.

Uhynstuyn
06-08-01, 01:34
hm... possibly. he ate whatever in the shell on the plate. and as an after meal breath mint, he took it, but before he got it, he died from poisining or something.

Ataris Regal
06-08-01, 12:26
a turtle was trying to eat his mint so he picked it up put it on the tray started eating it and choked to death

ChipAli
06-08-01, 21:40
Is the plate a license plate?
The man was drunk, and tried to er.. eat an egg and a mint, and got hit by a car near a gas station with a friendly tortoise who worked at the U.S. mint so he could buy oysters which conveniently come on dishes.

Volraths_bane
06-08-01, 22:43
Okay......I feel I might have said it wrong...how is this for a hint...

He died from a gunshot.

Ask yes or no questions, I will reply till you get it.

GoatLord
06-09-01, 03:07
Was he robbing a Federal Mint, where money is printed?
Was the Shell from a Shotgun like I said?

Dusk_
06-09-01, 17:37
Is there any type of food related to this riddle?

Volraths_bane
06-09-01, 18:43

Goatlord
Yes!
Close enough.

should be easy now...

Will have realy ones soon.

He was trying to take money from a printing plate, got shot, and died on the sidewalk

Spawn-Slayer
06-09-01, 21:04
I've heard half of these from playing D&D. Here's one:

The man who made it doesn't want it.
The man who bought it doesn't need it.
The man who needs it doesn't know it.

What is it? :D

Dusk_
06-09-01, 21:36
a soul
mind if i post a riddle next?

GoatLord
06-09-01, 21:57
WRONG DUSK!

The answer is a coffin.

You don't make your own coffin,
You don't personaly use the one you buy ussaly,
When you do use one, your dead and don't know squat.

Dusk_
06-09-01, 22:42
oh well, i tried.

Here's my riddle

Two identical vehicles, containing one person each, drive off of a dock at the exact same time, and hit the water at the same time. Yet only one person survives. How?

LlanowarGoblin
06-09-01, 22:46
One of the vehicles was and airplane.

GoatLord
06-10-01, 00:31
Uhh, Only one of these people know how to swim.

Dusk_
06-10-01, 11:51
They both know how to swim, lets just say the 2 people were both in the same physical condition. And the vehicles were identical too.

Squee
06-10-01, 12:54
the survivor is the person who watched these two vehicles do this

**or**

1 guy jumped out before his vehicle hit the water.

Another possibility is that one guy was already dead.

ChipAli
06-10-01, 17:32
One man was wearing his seatbelt?
One car drove off the dock sideways into shallow water?
One man was bleeding and eaten by a shark?
A comet hits the earth, decimating all life aside from the one man in a space shuttle orbitting the earth?

Dusk_
06-10-01, 19:00
This is one of those many multiple answer riddles, so lets narrow it down. They landed in close areas, near each other. THey were both alive. Nothing ate them. They were both wearing seat belts. THey both went underwater. And by 1 survivor i mean out of the 2 vans that went underwater.

(i gave a secret hint in there, look for it)

GoatLord
06-10-01, 19:17
Only one person tried to escape?

Dusk_
06-10-01, 20:41
ok then, both tried to escape. None of them were mentally unstable.

Squee
06-10-01, 21:51
more than likely, the hint was the van part...

either way, I give up, I've exhausted all reasonable possibilities.

except...

they were different docks...

and (since you said they landed close together) one was on the inside of a closed canal, and one was from land to the ocean.

That wouldn't include the van hint idea, though.

Dusk_
06-10-01, 21:54
Yes, the hint is the "van" part. Here's a hint. What do vans have over non convertable cars.(related to escaping vehicles)

LlanowarGoblin
06-10-01, 23:35
One van had too much cargo. The other guy got out the back where there was no cargo.

Dusk_
06-11-01, 10:13
Remember the identical bit will you!!!!!!!

Besides, cars can have a large cargo to.

Volraths_bane
06-11-01, 13:34
One van had scuba equipment in it...or an airtank of some sort?

Dusk_
06-11-01, 18:33
I already said they have the same cargo. Once again, what does a van have over a car?

Ataris Regal
06-11-01, 19:21
vans have more air in them

is that in anyway relevant to the riddle

Dusk_
06-12-01, 00:17
Not at all. Lets just say coughdoorscough

K-Orc
06-12-01, 23:11
one of the vans doors were locked and they were electric doors and the other vans were unlocked so only one of the people could escape there vehicle

GoatLord
06-12-01, 23:33
One guy tried to use his drivers side door, and the other used the sliding side door?

Volraths_bane
06-12-01, 23:51

Sorry....I couldn't resist anymore ;)

Dusk_
06-13-01, 10:00

06-13-01, 20:50

Errr... that one was two easy. So is this:

Dusk_

I have 2 riddles for you to solve. the first one is pretty easy and the second one is IMPOSSIBLE. If you know the second one, you either have heard it before or you are a genuis! anyway here is the first one. I dont know if these have been said but here they are

1. I rot growth and I grow rot. What am I? (this one is very easy)

2. You are in a room that has no doors or windows. all that is in the room is a mirror and a table. How can you get out of the room? (hint: nothin to do with magic)

GoatLord
06-17-01, 13:31
1: Mold?

#2: Look in the mirror, see what you saw take the saw, cut the table in half, put the two halves together to make a whole and crawl out that hole.

Hatredboy77
06-17-01, 14:09
HOW DID YOU GET IT!?!?!?! have you heard it before?? anyway, you are right and you were close enough on the first one. It was fungus. really, how did you know???

GoatLord
06-17-01, 16:24
I heard that one before, it's not that hard if you think about it.

Jonas29

Jonas29

I dunno I had it somewhere...

The guy saved the city became king, married his mom...

Volraths_bane
06-19-01, 21:28
You are thinking of Oedipus I beleive

Spiffy
06-20-01, 11:36
Yep, Jonas had it, and Volrath's_Bane helped with the name.
It was Oedipus, he did kill his dad, marry his mom, and ended up poking his eyes out with pins. Not a pleasant story, but that's what they teach you in high school.

Volraths_bane
06-20-01, 11:39
Um.....It wasn't Oedipus....that is a whole other story...I have read and seen the play.

THeseus answered the riddle of the Sphinx, I he also fulfilled a prophesy that a man with one scandal would cross the desert and become king......

I am pretty sure I am right
