Magic on Mac OS X: Mindless Automaton

Ok, this is little difficult but it works fine and well.
You need several softwares and some skill using the Terminal and unix software in general, if you don't know what are you doing... try to get a friend who know something about it

-- step 1: tools --
Anyway, software needed:
1) X11 application and libraries, you can get them from the OS X 10.3 install cd/dvd, or from http://sourceforge.net/projects/xonx/ if you have OS X 10.2

2) Compiler and libraries, install ProjectBuilder (OS X 10.2) or XCode (OS X 10.3), you can get them from http://developer.apple.com/ (free registration required) or from the extra cd/dvd bundled with your mac

3) Fink from http://fink.sourceforge.net/ or DarwinPorts from http://www.darwinports.com/

4) Mindless Automaton sources from http://mindless.sourceforge.net/

5) An updated cardinfo.dat (the same file used in apprentice)

-- step 2: compiling --
Let's go:
1) install X11.app or arwin.app

2) install ProjectBuilder.app or XCode.app

3) install Fink.app or the DarwinPorts, Fink is easier to use, more user-friendly and comes with a nice GUI also, I like darwin ports more but this is just my personal taste

4) setup everything (fink is fully automatic, darwinports need skill with enviroment variables and unix stuff)

5) open the Terminal and install the gtk2 libraries, this is done with one of the 2 software just installed:
using fink: "fink install gtk+2-dev"
using darwinports: "sudo port install gtk2"
Whatever you choose, this could take a wile.

6) unpack mindless sources (either double click on it or use the "tar" command)

7) "cd" to the newly created mindless directory and type "make"

-- step 3: running --
1) start X11 or arwin
2) using the X11 terminal (xterm) "cd" to mindless directory and type "./mindless"

Conclusion: it's not easy if you don't know how to work with a unix system (which OS X is) but it works! As soon as I get some spare time I'll try to pack everything up in a nice application and I submit it to the mindless maintainer

bye

Good to see someone took the time to get an apprentice compatible program up and running for the mac.
I am not a mac, or even Linux user, but I believe the mac societey has been taken for granted too much.

hi,

i've been trying to install mindless on mac os x for quite a time now and when i finally found the instructions here i was like 'hurray ! problems solved !' but unfortunately the are not.

i have fink, darwinports and gentoo setup. fink had some problems with the .profile file during the installation of which i think i have solved. and gentoo cannot sync, i think thats due to the network settings in my company which also prevents darwinports from getting the gettext file, imo.

anyway, i think i should be able to install mindless via fink even if i cancel out gentoo and darwinport. when i tried to get gtk2 libraries there were 39 packages and 13 of them didnt install due to a cross over with apple's x11 i guess (not completely my guess actually, it is implied in the error msg).

since i lack the unix experience it doesnt seem like a viable choice of having me meddle with x11 and fink. therefore, i am here for a solution to the network problems. is there a way i can have darwinports get its files from http instead of ftp ? or can i have gentoo sync on http instead of rsync (this may not be the real problem there but im almost sure about the ftp thing) ?

couldnt get a clue from neither the darwinports site nor the gentoo wiki.

thanks for your help.

ok, now mindless automaton is also avalaible under fink!!!

so:
1) fire up your favourite text editor and modify /sw/etc/fink.conf
2) find the line containing "stable/main" and "stable/crypto"
3) add to that line "unstable/main" (and "unstable/crypto" if you also want it)
4) run "fink selfupdate-rsync" or "fink selfupdate-cvs" to set an update method and update fink core
5) [optional] run "fink update-all" just to be sure to have everything at the latest version
6) run "fink install mindless"

FINISH!

to play:
1) open X11.app
2) in the terminal run "/sw/bin/mindless"

note:
1) latest WOTC oracle card ref is downloaded in /sw/share/mindless/oracle.txt first time you run mindless you have to choose that file
2) read "fink describe mindless" to get more info on this

ok, here's some info:
1) gentoo/macos is really at an early stage, I don't think it's convenient tu run it atm.
2) darwiports use cvs to update his ports tree, however you can download fresh nightly sources from http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/ just download it and mindless is already in the tree, you only need to get the sources but them are downloaded via http (I think)
3) fink use http/cvs/rsync to updates the tree, unfortunately the http way only sync you to the stable point release and mindless is only avalaible in unstable atm.

good luck

When I installed this, I had a lot of problems with the install plain failing and giving errors. What finally got it to work was FinkCommander. This can be found on the fink install dmg file, however it's not installed when you install fink. Just open the fink dmg>FinkCommander> and copy Finkcommander.app to your applications folder, run it and search for mindless, then click the 2nd button to install from source. The auto installer downloads the nescessary files, fixes errors and installs. Now I have mindless! yay!
